With winter approaching, state regulators continue to take steps to address extreme weather emergencies like those seen during Winter Storm Uri in February.
The Railroad Commission Tuesday adopted rules for critical designation of natural gas infrastructure to help during energy emergencies. The new rules implement provisions in House Bill 3648 and Senate Bill 3 passed this spring and define natural gas facilities that would be designated as critical gas suppliers and critical customers.
Under the new rules, critical gas suppliers include but aren’t limited to natural gas wells, oil leases that produce gas, natural gas pipeline facilities, underground natural gas storage facilities and saltwater disposal facilities. Critical customers would include facilities that require electricity to operate and must submit critical customer information to their electric utilities to the utilities have updated and correct information for purposes of supplying power to the facilities.
